They do say good things come to those who wait. And, five years after Ruben Vinagre first registered on Everton’s radar, The Toffees are finally on the verge of securing the Portugal U21 international’s signature (Record).

And, appropriately given the colour of their shirt, Vinagre’s move has come right out of the blue.

Over the weekend, O Jogo reported that Nottingham Forest were looking into an initial loan deal for a player who left Wolverhampton Wanderers as recently as last summer. Vinagre, who cost Sporting Lisbon £9 million, is available again after failing to win over head coach Ruben Amorim.

Fulham had also been linked. Everton, meanwhile, were nowhere to be seen. Until Tuesday night, of course.

In fact, until now, the only indication we had that Everton were admirers of Vinagre was that Daily Mail report, published back in October 2017, after an 18-year-old left-back caught the eye during a scintillating performance in a 4-0 thumping of Burton Albion in England’s second tier.

Everton, the Mail said, wanted to bring in competition for the ageing Leighton Baines at the time. And Vinagre, then on loan at Wolves from Monaco, was a target not just for the Toffees but also for Arsenal and Manchester City.

Five years on, Everton are unlikely to face such elite-level competition. The 23-year-old’s development has stalled in the last couple of seasons; Struggling for opportunities back home in Portugal after losing his place at Wolves to Rayan Air Nouri.

But that has not stopped former Molineux director Kevin Thelwell from offering Vinagre a chance to kick-start his stalling career on Merseyside.

“Ruben Vinagre is a hugely exciting prospect,” Everton’s new director of football once said, via the Premier League’s official website.

it was Thelwell’s nous and eye for a bargain that made him one of the game’s most highly-admired football operators at Wolves. Everton will be hoping – after years of misjudged signings and wasted funds – that his instincts remain as sharp as ever.
