Everton are reportedly battling a whole host of clubs in the race to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi in a move that would reunite him with Frank Lampard – and the Everton boss once said he thinks he can become “world class”.

Hudson-Odoi, 21, was a surprise omission from the entire Chelsea matchday squad on Saturday evening. Chelsea beat Lampard’s Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park, thanks to a penalty from Jorginho. But Hudson-Odoi was absent.

Reports state that the likes of Everton, West Ham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and more want to land the £120,000-a-week winger. Hudson-Odoi is said to be keen on a Chelsea exit in order to improve his game time.

Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, Hudson-Odoi will want minutes at a top Premier League club. A reunion with Lampard would surely tempt him, especially given the confidence Lampard has in his ability.

In 2019, as posted on Chelsea’s website, Lampard said: “He can show the club where he came through the Academy, that he is going to be a world-class player. I truly believe that. I see him being a huge player for us.”

Everton in Hudson-Odoi race: Lampard thinks he can become ‘world class’

What a signing Hudson-Odoi would be for Everton. A real coup. Yes, the Toffees already have numerous options on the flanks. The likes of Demarai Gray, Andros Townsend, Dwight McNeil and Anthony Gordon.

But Gordon is still interesting Newcastle, and is better as a no.10. Townsend is seen as more of a squad player. So, surely, bringing in another winger – especially after losing Richarlison – might still be a priority for Lampard.

Hudson-Odoi fits the bill. He adds some flair, some vigour, some Champions League quality to a side that are so in desperate need of it. Impressing under Lampard previously, he would surely rediscover that form at Everton.
