What’s thought to be the earliest photo of LDS church founder Joseph Smith has been recovered by a descendant of his after almost 180 years.

According to the John Whitmer Historical Association Facebook page, the family of Joseph Smith Jr allegedly found a daguerreotype – an early photograph – of the Mormon church founder.

The photo

The Facebook page announced that the family had long thought there was an image of the church founder before his death in 1844.

The group posted: “Smith family members and historians have long believed that a daguerreotype, or photograph, of Joseph Smith, Jr., was made before his June 27, 1844, assassination. That daguerreotype has now been found.”

It goes on to say on the John Whitmer Historical Association website that the picture was inside a family heirloom – a pocket watch – passed down through the Smith family.

The Church of the Latter-Day Saints issued a statement to KSL News Radio during which they said they couldn’t confirm the legitimacy of the image.

They said: “Every few years, potential donors bring artefacts to the Church History Library for review, including alleged photographs of the prophet Joseph Smith. Such artefacts are, of course, of great interest to the Church.

“Though it was not mentioned specifically in the article, Church Historians, archivists and artefact experts were provided—by the item’s owner and the article’s authors—the opportunity to analyze the locket and photo and to review their findings prior to publication.”

1805-1844

Although they couldn’t confirm it to be a legitimate piece they said ‘the daguerreotype and locket were created of the materials and methods appropriate to the 1840s also adding “nothing is definitively known about the locket’s history before 1992”.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph Smith was the founder and first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). People of the LDS faith believe Smith had a vision in 1820 where he claimed to have seen two people described as “God the Father” and “Jesus Christ”.

Smith also claimed in 1823 that an angel appeared to him and directed him to the “buried book of golden plates”. From this he would go on to publish the Book of Mormon after founding the church.

Under Smith, the church grew from six to 26,000, according to the LDS, and he moved his church west in the United Stated with plans to build a communal ‘Zion’. However, Smith was ultimately assassinated in 1844 after an alleged rift grew between him and some of his associates.

These former associates attacked Smith’s stance on polygamy, and he was eventually assassinated by being shot multiple times and falling out of a window.
