It looks like Dolly Parton has been working 9 to 5 and some overtime lately.

The 76-year-old American singer-songwriter is responsible for some of the most iconic and beloved songs of all time, whether that’s Jolene, I Will Always Love You, or beyond.

Speaking of beyond, The Orville takes us there.

Created by and starring Seth MacFarlane (of Family Guy fame), this American sci-fi infuses comedy and drama into the expansive tale of Ed Mercer as he embarks upon 25th-century adventures.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Star Trek while offering respectful and heartfelt parody, it’s been a pleasure to welcome the crew back for season 3. However, one of the biggest surprises has been saved for season 3 episode 8. Dolly Parton is in The Orville.

Dolly Parton cameos in The Orville

The queen of country Dolly Parton makes an appearance in Midnight Blue, 43 minutes in to be precise.

Heveena is in a lovingly decorated and homely cabin, confused about where she is. However, her solitude is interrupted by the singer-songwriter’s cameo.

“There you are,” she exclaims. “Welcome, come on in. Don’t be shy.”

Heveena is taken aback in awe and Dolly puts her at ease, explaining that she’s not all that and perhaps not even all there. “I am so glad to finally meet you Heveena,” Dolly says, portraying a program of herself. “I’ve heard so many good things about you.”

However, Heveena isn’t having any of it, arguing that the woman before her is an illusion and isn’t real.

Dolly admits that she’s been programmed from lots of records and historical data. “I may not be real,” she reveals, “but I’m still all Dolly.”

Settling in, Dolly and Heveena begin to have a heartfelt conversation, with Dolly reminiscing a story of her childhood and how her mother sewed her toes back together after an injury. Heveena isn’t sure of the meaning behind the tale and Dolly insists that it’s just a story before adding “If you do the right thing in the here and now, the future has a way of taking care of itself.”

Wrapping up the scene, Dolly gets out her guitar and begins to perform a song; or poetry, if you ask Heveena.

‘It’s a universe that has infinite boundaries’

Speaking with Gizmodo, Seth MacFarlane has been vocal about The Orville’s limitless potential beyond a third season:

“It’s really like Family Guy in a lot of ways. It’s a universe that has infinite boundaries and so it can really go as long as there’s a demand for it. It’s a true ensemble show—there are, what, nine, 10 characters that are all, I think, equally dynamic. So there are lots and lots more stories.”

On the show’s future, he added: “That’s really governed by audience response, if there’s an appetite for it, and the commitment by a studio to give us the resources — Disney and Hulu were wonderful this year…”
