Two years ago next month, Leeds United reportedly failed with a £27 million bid for Lazio centre-back Luiz Felipe. And The Whites were far from the only club fluttering their eyelashes at a man who appeared to be on his way to the very top of the European game.

According to Rome-based publication La Lazio Siamo Noi, Barcelona were interested too. As were Paris Saint-Germain.

So there are a couple of ways to view Felipe’s sudden move to Real Betis, joining the Copa del Rey winners on a free following the expiration of his Lazio contract.

On one hand, this has the makings of a potentially inspired piece of business, assuming Felipe can rediscover the form that had Leeds willing to splash out a club-record transfer fee in an attempt to fight off competition from two of the game’s bonafide superclubs.

On the other, the fact that Betis found themselves facing relatively little competition from Europe’s elite this summer – despite Felipe’s free-agent status – is an indication as to how far the Italy international’s reputation has fallen over the last two years.

“When I learned that Betis wanted me, I didn’t think twice,” the Brazil-born defender tells Tuttomercatoweb. “I only had Betis in mind and I really wanted to come here.

“I know the importance of this city and this club, I know the stadium and its size, I know that there are always 60,000 people in the stands.

“Last year, Betis won the Copa del Rey. This year, we will start from scratch and see how far we can go. But we have a strong team and we have our goals.”

From Nabil Fekir to Sergio Canales, Hector Bellerin to Willian Jose, Giovani Lo Celso to Christian Tello; Real Betis have an excellent track record when it comes to handing talented players a much-needed fresh start and helping to get their careers back on the right track.

Felipe will be hoping he, too, can be revived at the Benito Villamarin.
