Former Rangers ace Joe Aribo says Calvin Bassey is ‘very happy’ with his impending £19 million move from the Scottish Premiership giants to Eredivisie champions Ajax, speaking to talkSPORT (20 July, 12.20pm).

This was always likely to be a summer of change at Ibrox.

But, if the early signs are anything to go by, the future looks brighter than ever, even as Bassey packs his bags and prepares to follow new Southampton signing Aribo out the exit door.

Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo dovetailed in devastating fashion as Rangers blew West Ham United away during Tuesday’s 3-1 pre-season victory in Glasgow. Antonio Colak, meanwhile, arrives on the back of 22 goals for Malmo last term.

And while Aribo and Bassey will not be easy to replace, their departures will give Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson around £30 million to play with as Rangers explore eye-catching deals for the likes of Romania playmaker Darius Olaru and Besiktas left-back Ridvan Yilmaz.

Calvin Bassey will swap Rangers for Ajax

“I speak to him a lot,” Aribo says of his former Gers team-mate Bassey. “He’s very happy with the move.”

According to Fabrizio Romano, Bassey should become an Ajax player on Wednesday. The Nigeria international will join the Dutch giants for a fee just shy of the £20 million mark.

It’s been quite the turnaround for a player who, just a few months ago, was stuck behind Borna Barisic and Leon Balogun in the Rangers’ pecking order.

“He deserves it because he had an amazing season,” Aribo adds. “Really exciting. (Ajax) is a massive club.”

Ben Davies, the one-time Celtic target who arrives from Liverpool for an initial £3 million, helps fill a Bassey-shaped hole in Van Bronckhorst’s backline. According to the Daily Mail, Turkey international Yilmaz is another player on Rangers’ radar. A technically-gifted, forward-thinking left-back, Yilmaz scored three goals and produced four assists from a so-called ‘defensive’ role last term.

Besiktas president Ahmet Nur Cebi admits that he will not stand in Yilmaz’s way either. It remains to be seen, however, if Rangers are willing to stump up £8 million. 21-year-old Yilmaz has less than 12 months left on his contract after all.
