Oludare Olufunwa has underlined his delight at joining Liverpool on a permanent basis following his Southampton release – with a post on Instagram. The defender has joined the Reds after a successful trial period.

Olufunwa, 21, has been brought in by Liverpool to bolster the club’s Under-21 side. It comes after the Saints chose not to renew the defender’s contract, despite clocking up 31 appearances for the club’s reserve side over the years.

Liverpool’s transfer approach this summer has been bringing in a lot of younger players. Darwin Nunez is 23, while Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay are still in their teens. Olufunwa is another example of that this summer.

However, the ex-Saints defender is unlikely to be as involved in the first team as those three players. He is expected to be a regular in the Under-21 side after impressing during a trial. He took to Instagram to share his delight.

Olufunwa delight at joining Liverpool

It is a brilliant move for the young defender given he has just been released by Southampton. But his chances of first-team game time are almost impossible – and instead, it looks as if Liverpool are trying to improve their U21 side.

Ultimately, for Olufunwa, it benefits him too. He gets to train with some of the world’s best if called-up to senior training. He will also get the chance to shine for the reserves, in Premier League 2, which is growing in quality.

While his chances of breaking into the senior Liverpool side are small, it will certainly enhance his career prospects. It might be down the line that he earns a move to a Championship club, or of the like, because of his Liverpool U21 form.

Olufunwa could make his debut this weekend for Liverpool’s Under-21 side, when they travel to Brighton on Sunday.
