Danny Murphy has claimed that ‘super talent’ James Maddison would rather join Chelsea than Newcastle United this summer, as he told talkSPORT.

Rumours have been rife that Newcastle want to sign the Leicester City star and Murphy shared that he would be ‘tempted’ by a move to St James’ Park, but a transfer to a ready-made team, like Chelsea, would be better.

The cash-rich Magpies have put in two bids for Maddison – the latest at £50 million – but both offers have been rejected by those in the King Power Stadium boardroom.

In previous years, the Foxes, when the price has been right, have sold their top talents and accumulated over £200 million from sales of N’Golo Kante, Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell, to name a few.

The difference here is that all those teams were in the Champions League, something Newcastle can’t provide, as Murphy shared his thoughts on the rumours.

“I think it would probably take another £20 or 30 million, to be honest,” said Murphy. “He is a super talent. The only question mark over Maddison is application. Sometimes his attitude.

“But his talent is up there. He should have played more times for England and should have been in the reckoning a lot more. He is the only dark horse I can see getting into the England squad. If he starts the season, like he finished the last. To get 18 goals and 12 assists (in all comps), that’s 30 goal involvements, in a season at Leicester is some going.

On if it’s a right move: “It depends how quickly they try to transform the club and how quickly they get forward. At the moment, Leicester and Newcastle, you would say Leicester are arguably better.

“But Newcastle will quickly overtake them. I know he’s earning a lot of money at Leicester, but I would be tempted to the project.

“If someone like Chelsea were to come in, then I would rather go to a ready-made team. Is he good enough? Yes. He has all the qualities to play Champions League football and international football.”

WHAT IS MADDISON’S TRANSFER VALUE?

A certain Jack Grealish was purchased for £100 million last summer by Manchester City.

At the time, he wasn’t even an England regular and he had never played in Europe before, so it was a big call for the Premier League champions to throw that kind of money on the table.

Leicester might feel that their star man is closer to that type of figure, even if the price of English players are inflated.

At the end of the day, you are worth what the buying club is willing to pay for you, to the selling club, especially if you are a key player like Maddison, then you are worth a lot.

Whilst Newcastle have endless money to spend, and perhaps fans are waiting for that standout purchase, then it will be interesting to see how far they push the boat out on this one.
