Earlier today, Bordeaux announced that Sekou Mara has been sold to Southampton, despite interest from Newcastle and Leeds.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that Newcastle turned their attention to the 19-year-old after missing out on Hugo Ekitike to Paris Saint-Germain.

Leeds were also in the race to sign Mara, although now, both Eddie Howe and Jesse Marsch will have to look elsewhere as Southampton secure the teenager’s signature.

Bordeaux add that the France Under-20 international will now travel to England, where he will undergo a medical with the Saints ahead of his £11m move to the Premier League.

Interest in Mara came after he scored six goals in 26 Ligue 1 appearances last season, as Bordeaux finished bottom of France’s top-flight.

Due to financial issues, they have now been demoted to the third division of French football, so the money received from Mara’s sale could actually prove vital for the future of the club.

Steven Gerrard was also keen to bring Mara to Aston Villa, after learning that he was up for sale.

Newcastle & Leeds may have missed out on a gem

In our view, Southampton fans should get excited about Mara.

Manchester City and Atlético Madrid were also interested in signing the Paris-born forward, which speaks volumes about his vast potential.

Additionally, you may not think much of his six goals last season, but that isn’t an easy tally for a teenager to reach in the league’s worst side, to say the least.

France – specifically Paris – continues to churn out incredible talents on a yearly basis, and in our view, Southampton have just got their hands on one of their own.

It remains to be seen if he hits the heights of another Paris-born gem in Kylian Mbappe, but we certainly have high hopes for Mara ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
