Former Everton hero Andy Gray insists he is ‘not that disappointed’ after the Premier League outfit sold star man Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, speaking to talkSPORT (22 June, 10.20am).
Where would The Toffees be right now without Richarlison? Well, the Championship, probably.
During the final nail-biting month of a torturous 2021/22 campaign, the Brazil international scored a winner against Chelsea, a last-gasp equaliser against Leicester City and a crucial strike in the 3-2 triumph over Crystal Palace that secured the Merseysider’s top-flight status for another year at least.
So Richarlison £60 million move to Tottenham, coupled with Everton’s inability to find a high-quality replacement, has raised fears about another relegation battle in 2022/23. So far, centre-back James Tarkowski is the only new addition to Frank Lampard’s squad.
“The close season has not been what I’d hoped,” says Gray, who won four trophies with the Toffees in the mid-1980s.
“I do think we’re better than we’ve seen. I don’t think the squad is as bad as people say, they’re just not performing.
“But the inability to attract new talent has disappointed me. I thought with Frank Lampard in charge, it might help bring people in.”

Gray, however, does not subscribe to the view that life without Richarlison isn’t worth living as far as Everton are concerned.
“I know they’ve lost Richarlison and I know a lot of Evertonians will be bemoaning that fact,” the former Scotland international adds.
“I’m not. Yes, he had a good finish to the season last year. Yes, he got five or six goals (in the final few months). But I think that papered over a lot of problems we had with Richarlison.
“So I’m not that disappointed he’s gone if we invest the £60 million wisely.”
Everton have been linked with a number of potential replacements, including Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Alassane Plea.
