Gianluca Scamacca should choose West Ham United and the Premier League over French champions Paris Saint-Germain, former Serie A goalkeeper Graziano Battistini tells Sky Italia.

You know things have changed at the Parc des Princes when PSG are unwilling to match West Ham’s offer for one of the most exciting young strikers in European football.

Yes, money is still no object as far as PSG’s coffers are concerned. But, after another underwhelming campaign and yet more Champions League humiliation, Les Parisiens are doing things differently these days.

Gone is the ‘glitter’, to quote president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Welcome to a new age of self-sustainability. And Scamacca is perhaps the posterboy for PSG’s new approach to the transfer market. Established superstars are no longer on the menu. PSG, these days, have a taste with exciting up-and-comers.

Scamacca has already agreed personal terms with PSG. Christophe Galtier’s side have no intention of meeting Sassuolo’s £42 million asking price, however, putting West Ham firmly in the box seat.

“Scamacca is a young player of great value and Serie A would lose (if he left),” says Battistini, formerly of Udinese and Hellas Verona, pointing to Mauro Icardi’s struggles in the French capital.

“If I were him, I would choose the Premier League.

“I would be careful with the top clubs. (Scamacca may) risk ending up like Icardi. In the PSG attack, they have players who (if you put on the bench it) becomes a problem.”

According to Sky Sports, West Ham have submitted a new bid for the 6ft 5ins Scamacca this week. This comes after Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali admitted that the Hammers had tested the waters with a £34 million offer earlier in July.

Scamacca scored 16 Serie A goals last season. Only five players – including Lautaro Martinez, Tammy Abraham and Dusan Vlahovic – found the net more frequently.

And, as Battistini points out, PSG is far from the ideal destination for a 23-year-old forward hoping to play regular first-team football.

Icardi, Serie A’s top scorer as recently as 2018, started just ten games last season after all. And, since then, PSG have added Hugo Ekitike to their ranks while tying Kylian Mbappe down to a new deal.
