Jon Dahl Tomasson has secured his first signing as Blackburn Rovers manager with Callum Brittain joining from Barnsley, who could make his debut on the opening day against QPR.

The Ewood Park natives raise the curtain for the new Championship campaign at home to Michael Beale’s side on July 30. Blackburn won the last meeting between the sides 1-0 this February in Lancashire, stretching an unbeaten home run to 11 fixtures in all competitions.

Rovers will now see in the new season striving to maintain their run over QPR dating back to 1999 to get new boss Tomasson’s tenure off on the right foot. The Dane took over from Tony Mowbray in June, following five years with the Englishman who oversaw 267 games.

Blackburn secure first signing of Jon Dahl Tomasson tenure with Callum Brittain

Tomasson has now secured his first signing as Blackburn manager in Brittain joining from Barnsley on a four-year contract. His arrival fills Ryan Nyambe’s void at right-back, after he joined Wigan Athletic as a free agent earlier in the week following his Rovers deal expiring.

Nyambe had spent 11 years at Ewood Park after the nine-cap Namibia international joined Blackburn in his youth. He went on to make 201 first-team appearances with Rovers across all competitions, including starting 31 of a potential 32 Championship matches last season.

Brittain has now signed for Blackburn for an undisclosed fee from Barnsley after two years at Oakwell. He previously featured for academy side MK Dons and Throttur on loan, before the 24-year-old amassed 82 outings with the Tykes for eight assists across all competitions.

Tomasson could now hand his first signing as Blackburn manager his debut against QPR by starting Brittain. So, with that in mind, what can his fist Rovers line-up look like on July 30?

Thomas Kaminski (GK): Tony Mowbray favourite to retain place in new Rovers-era

Thomas Kaminski was a favourite under Mowbray and should retain his mainstay presence in the new Blackburn-era under Tomasson. The 29-year-old has played 87 of a possible 92 Championship games since joining Rovers in 2020, while recording 23 clean sheets to date.

Callum Brittain (RB): Blackburn secure first signing of Jon Dahl Tomasson’s reign

Brittain signing with Blackburn will remove any doubt over Tomasson’s starting right-back following Nyambe’s departure. The former England U20 international fills the Namibian’s void, following registering three assists in 36 Championship outings for Barnsley last term.

Daniel Ayala (CB): John Dahl Tomasson to lean on influence of Spanish defender

Tomasson will lean on the influence of Daniel Ayala when naming his first competitive XI when Blackburn host QPR. The Spaniard often ensured Rovers presented a solid backline in Mowbray’s reign, with his physicality also proving important while defending set-pieces.

Scott Wharton (CB): Blackburn product to step up in wake of Darragh Lenihan exit

Blackburn product Scott Wharton should now take on greater responsibilities in defence in the wake of Darragh Lenihan’s exit. The Middlesbrough signing and former Rovers captain left Ewood Park at the end of his contract in June after rejecting a new deal, per BBC Sport.

Lenihan’s move to the Riverside should result in Wharton receiving further exposure with Blackburn yet to sign a centre-half. The 24-year-old has so far amassed 44 senior games with Rovers, having enjoyed his first-team breakthrough last term with 30 league outings.

Harry Pickering (LB): Defender to build on promising debut campaign

Harry Pickering will now hope to build on his promising debut campaign at Ewood Park in the new season. The 23-year-old cemented himself as Mowbray’s preferred option on the left-flank after joining from Crewe in May 2021 with 33 outings, two goals and two assists.

John Buckley (CDM): Blackburn product to give Jon Dahl Tomasson crucial creativity

Tomasson will hope John Buckley will provide Blackburn with crucial creativity from central midfield next season. The Rovers product offered seven assists and three goals over his 42 Championship games last term, having previously only scored three and created two in 50.

Lewis Travis (CDM): Tony Mowbray’s anchor to lock down new Rovers unit

Lewis Travis was Mowbray’s midfield anchor last season and will once again lock down the new Rovers unit under Tomasson. The 24-year-old only failed to start one Championship match in 2021/22 and also occasionally took ownership of Blackburn’s captain’s armband.

Jo Inge Berget (RM): Jon Dahl Tomasson interested in Blackburn deal for Malmo ace

After landing Brittain as his first Blackburn signing, Tomasson is interested in strengthening the attack with Malmo forward Jo Inge Berget. Fotboll Direkt cite Rovers’ admiration of the 31-year-old, who has so far recorded two goals and four assists in 2022 in all competitions.

The 20-cap Norway international also has previous experience under Tomasson, having hit 14 goals and 20 assists over 75 games through 2020 to 2021. But the Lancashire Telegraph report Berget is in talks with Malmo over a new contract with his deal ending in December.

Sammie Szmodics (CAM): Peterborough chief has confirmed Blackburn interest

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has claimed that Blackburn have lodged three offers for Sammie Szmodics. The 26-year-old suffered relegation to League One with Posh last term, but still impressed with six goals and an assist over 36 second-tier matches.

“Blackburn have made three bids for Sammie, and we have rejected them all,” Fry said, via LancsLive. “Whether or not they come back with another offer is anyone’s guess.

“Blackburn have bid way in excess of what we paid [Bristol City, £1m, in 2020] for Sammie and if the offers keep creeping up, and the player knows he can earn £20k-per-week, we could have a problem down the line. We are not at that stage yet.”

Ryan Hedges (LM): Winger has caught Jon Dahl Tomasson’s eye in pre-season

Ryan Hedges has caught Tomasson’s eye over Blackburn’s pre-season so far this summer with the forward featuring throughout. So, the 27-year-old may expect to start the season opener against QPR, and prove why Mowbray signed him from Aberdeen back in January.

Ben Brereton Diaz (ST): Jon Dahl Tomasson will hope to keep Blackburn talisman

Tomasson will hope to keep Ben Brereton Diaz at Blackburn amid significant interest in the Rovers talisman this summer. The Chile forward is in the final year of his contract at Ewood Park, and dazzled the Championship last term with 22 goals and three assists in 37 fixtures.

Now, the Daily Mail claim David Moyes is considering a move for West Ham United to sign Brereton Diaz. Reports by AS also note Leeds United made an approach for the 23-year-old, who The Sun link to Everton, Bournemouth, Sevilla, Valencia and Real Betis for £20m.
