‘Brilliant’: Former team-mate says Rangers are signing an ‘excellent’ player

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have pulled off an inspired bit of business with Ben Davies arriving from Liverpool in an initial £3 million deal, former Preston North End team-mate Daryl Horgan tells the Scottish Sun.

It’s easy to forget, as Calvin Bassey closes in on a near-£20 million move to the giants of Ajax, that the Amsterdam-bound defender was far from a regular in the Rangers starting XI only a couple of months ago.

Few would have imagined, as recently as Christmas 2021, that he’d be replacing Nathan Patterson as the most expensive departure in the club’s history.

But things change quickly in football. A couple of stand-out performances against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will do wonders for your reputation.

And Rangers certainly weren’t wasting any time when they struck a deal to bring Davies in from the cold at Anfield as Bassey’s replacement. The 26-year-old joins in a deal worth up to £4 million.

Davies, a one-time Celtic target, failed to make a single first-team appearance in 18 months as a Liverpool player.

“I played a season with Ben Davies and he was brilliant,” Horgan says of a cultured yet commanding footballer who blossomed into one of the Championship’s best during his time at Deepdale.

“He was excellent on the park and he is a lovely left-footed centre half. Ben reads the game and utilises his pace and intelligence really well.

“He might not be the biggest in the world, but he has a good leap and can handle himself. I’m sure he will settle into Rangers really well. Davies is a good replacement for him (Bassey).”

Davies is not exactly a like-for-like successor for the one-time Leicester City youngster. He is less explosive, a little slower across the turf, and doesn’t offer the same sort of attacking thrust when filling in out wide.

What he will bring, however, is character, determination and a voice on and off the pitch.

“(Davies) is well equipped to play at the highest level,” adds Horgan. “And I can see him doing well.”
