Jacob Ramsey has labelled Aston Villa target Calvin Bassey’s transfer from Rangers to Ajax as ‘big’, as he posted on his Instagram story.

Following Steven Gerrard’s departure from Rangers to Villa last November, one player that thrived after his exit was Bassey.

The 22-year-old produced outstanding displays in the Scottish Premiership, but most importantly, he was perhaps their standout player in Europe for them, as they were beaten in the Europa League final to Frankfurt.

That’s why a number of Premier League clubs were looking at the hard-hitting defender this summer, including Gerrard eyeing a possible reunion with the player.

But he will take up the task of trying to help Ajax add another Eredivisie title to their cabinet this season, after success under the now-departed Erik ten Hag.

Nonetheless, when Bassey’s transfer to Ajax was confirmed, Villa’s thriving midfielder posted on his IG story ‘good luck bro. Big!’.

DESERVED MOVE FOR BASSEY

In terms of pressure cooker environments and having to win the league every season, there isn’t much difference between Ajax and Rangers, in that regard.

But Bassey is making a step up in regards to playing Champions League football next season, something he wouldn’t have got at Ibrox or Villa Park.

It’s probably the player’s performances in Europe that convinced Ajax he was the guy to replace the recently-departed, Lisandro Martinez, who has since joined Manchester United.

Sky Sports report that the deal for Bassey is just under £23 million, given that the player wouldn’t have been a sure starter under Gerrard, it’s understandable why the Midlands side didn’t put that sort of money on the table for his talents.

But, during this coming season, it’s going to be interesting to see how the player fares and if he can prove some Premier League teams wrong and how they should have taken a punt on him.
