A viral Reddit post of a photograph showing a red glow over the Atlantic Ocean has sprouted some insane fan theories.

Subreddit DamnThatsInteresting is the go-to place for all things unusual and unbelievable, and the community’s latest viral post lives up to the name.

Three images of the sky, allegedly photographed by a pilot, show three splodges of vibrant red light shining through the clouds. Posted on 22 July 2022, the “mysterious red glow” was said to be located over the Atlantic Ocean.

This is why the window view is the best seat in the house, so you don’t miss these freaky sightings.

There is no official confirmation for the cause yet, but fans have given their two cents and some are more outlandish than others.

Mystifying red glow over Atlantic Ocean prompts outrageous predictions

One look at the photos and you’d think a superhero villain has landed on Earth to cause trouble – Scarlet Witch would make total sense here.

Demon invasion

There’s no Marvel character this time around, but one Redditor has suggested that a demon invasion is upon us due to the rumor that the first Doom game – released in 1993 – is set in 2022.

The game is a first-person shooter where players assumed the role of a space marine to fight invading demons from hell.

“First Doom game was set in 2022, so this is it. There comes the demons. There is the end…” they said. Well, we also thought 2012 was the end of the world, so there’s probably no demons.

Stranger Things’ Upside Down IRL

Jumping on the current Stranger Things hype, one user suggested that the photo bears resemblance to The Upside Down, so the new season is “looking wild”. There’s already an experience based on the show, so this is a real step-up.

In the series, the Upside Down is an alternate dimension parallel to the human world – commanded by Vecna, it’s famous for its dark abandoned state with the occasional red glow for his powers.

Fishing lights

The most upvoted comment at 12.2K predicts that the red glow is the result of “fishing vessels using red lights to attract saury,” which one user labelled as the “first realistic answer”.

Saury lights are red LED lights used for commercial fishing to attract seafood. Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Delta advertises them as alternatives to traditional fishing lights which are reportedly less efficient.

Many lights are hung around the perimeter of the boat, so when powered up, it creates a bright red glow. If saury lights are indeed the red glow in the viral post, it means that at least three boats were lined up next to each other to create the formation. However, since the glow is visible from through the clouds, it’s possible that there were many boats in proximity to each other in order to create such an intense colour.
