It seems as though Frederic Guilbert’s time at Aston Villa might well be up after a pre-season tour of Australia to forget for the defender.
It’s not a case of Guilbert not performing, but not being given the chance by Steven Gerrard, and therefore, clear signals are being sent to him.
The Frenchman only featured during Villa’s pre-season win against Leeds – and did an okay job – but he was left out of the 25-man squad that faced Brisbane Roar and Manchester United.

Matty Cash is the undisputed right-back for Villa, after all, he did win the Supporters Player of the Year last season, and then there is youngster Kaine Kesler Hayden, who did feature and impressed down under.
Nonetheless, the Birmingham Mail posted that when Villa left for Australia, Guilbert wasn’t on the squad bus to the airport and headed on the media bus alongside those that didn’t feature, instead.
Well, Guilbert posted the following message on Twitter, upon his return to the UK, as he thanked Australia for their service.

HAS GUILBERT BEEN FAIRLY TREATED IN VILLA COLOURS?
Guilbert joined Villa when they were in the Championship, but was loaned back before the club’s promotion to the Premier League under Dean Smith – he picked Villa even they were struggling in the second-tier, at the time.
Up until football shutdown because of COVID-19, he had an up and down time in Claret & Blue colours, but who didn’t during that period for the Midlands side? It was Villa’s first season back, with a lot of changes and experienced faces trying to make their mark.
The following campaign, when Villa survived and were settled, the forward-thinking fullback was loaned out by Smith, before being put in that same situation against last season.
Out in France, he produced strong performances for Caen and Strasbourg, but upon his return to Villa, he has only been handed 45 minutes by Steven Gerrard.
Yes, it’s easier for a manager to part ways with a player that he didn’t purchase, and that’s the case here, but from the player’s perspective, he hasn’t done much wrong, added with hardly being given a chance, so he can argue he has been harshly treated.
Or that’s just the brutal reality of Premier League football.
