Speaking on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has been discussing Maxwel Cornet’s situation amid ongoing links to the Premier League.

The Ivorian was one of the breakout stars of last season, and while Burnley were relegated last term, Cornet was brilliant during his debut campaign in England.

The likes of Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham have now all been linked with a move for Cornet, but according to Jacobs, Newcastle have also been offered the chance to land the former Lyon man.

The journalist states that Newcastle could’ve signed Cornet for less than £15m – a fee that he described as a bargain’, but they didn’t make the move.

What’s been said?

Jacobs spoke about Cornet’s transfer situation.

“There are stories about this release clause, but I’m not aware of a release clause amount and not one that could be activated this window. I don’t think it would be necessary even if there is one because I think Cornet is being offered around the £12-15m mark, which I think would be a bargain price for a player of his quality.” Jacobs said.

“Newcastle would need to assess whether he’d add anything comparative to what they already have. Newcastle, as I understand it were offered Cornet for under £15m, and they didn’t move on it, so I don’t think there’s too much in that from a Newcastle perspective.”

Worth revisiting

Newcastle may not have gone for Cornet when offered the chance to sign him earlier this summer, but they may want to revisit this move in the near future.

Despite their best efforts, the Magpies have been struggling to bring a winger to St James’ Park this summer.

Their pursuits of Jack Harrison, Moussa Diaby and Harvey Barnes have all been unsuccessful thus far, and if Cornet is still available for that cut-price fee, Newcastle may want to have another look. After all, this is a player who showed bags of quality in the English top-flight last term.

Newcastle could do a lot worse than Cornet as they look to bolster their wide areas.
