It’s always hard to decide on your favourite actor. Then again, when somebody cites Ryan Gosling you can’t help but feel he might muscle his way to the top spot.

The 41-year-old Canadian has showcased his versatile talents across a range of movies now, including Drive, La La Land, First Man, Blade Runner 2049, The Notebook and many more. Many think of him as a great actor but not an action star.

Well, that may change any minute now thanks to Joe and Anthony Russo’s The Gray Man, an action-packed blockbuster epic that hit Netflix on Friday, July 22nd 2022.

Ryan stars in the adaptation of Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name as “Sierra Six” a CIA mercenary who becomes the target of his own organisation and global assassins after he comes into possession of unsettling agency secrets.

The Avengers filmmakers go big yet again, but it’s all about the details. Speaking of which, are Ryan Gosling’s tattoos in The Gray Man real?

Are Ryan Gosling’s tattoos in The Gray Man real?

Ryan Gosling does have tattoos in real life but was given some fake ones for the purpose of his The Gray Man character.

So that you know which ones are fake, let’s list off the ones that are real.

The Cinemaholic reports that the actor has five known tattoos, with one of them being The Giving Tree – a children’s book – on his left arm. On one of the fingers of his left hand, he has the name Esme, which is for his daughter Esmeralda.

Another – which was seen in The Place Beyond the Pines, where his character had lots of fake tattoos – is of a lady next to a skeleton, done in minimalist linework on his left inner arm.

His fourth tattoo is one of two that the actor actually did himself. It’s the hand of a monster on his left forearm and then the fifth is of a barcode on his left wrist.

Sierra Six’s The Gray Man tattoo explained

The tattoo that audiences will be curious about is addressed in the film itself but isn’t a real tattoo that Ryan Gosling has.

Claire asks about it and he tells her it’s in Greek and the name of a god. He begins to explain the story behind it which reveals that it’s a reference to the tale of Sisyphus, who was forced to carry a rock up a hill over and over again; every time he got close to the top it fell back down.

This serves as a punishment for his attempt at cheating death.

It’s clearly not a random choice and there can be parallels drawn between Six and Sisyphus, with the tattoo explanation scene inviting audiences to make the connection. Like Sisyphus, Six manages to escape certain death but on a number of occasions, which Lloyd Hansen (played by Chris Evans) himself remarks upon.

Instead of pushing a rock up a hill over and over, Six may have got the tattoo in prison because he was stuck behind bars living out the same day on repeat. The mundanity and repetition of prison life – being punished for his actions, or cheating death at the hands of his father – likely influenced him to get the ink.

The other tattoos are suggested to be prison tattoos too.

‘It might as well make you laugh’

Way back in 2007, Ryan Gosling addressed the nature of tattoos in an interview with The Guardian.

Looking at the barcode-esque tattoo on his hand, the interviewer mistook it for a stamp from a nightclub and he explained it was “a homemade tattoo.”

He argued that “a tattoo should never be meaningful because at a certain point you’re going to hate it, and it might as well make you laugh.”

Judging from the tattoo for his daughter since then, on the other hand, it’s likely that he changed his approach to body art.

The Gray Man is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
