Tottenham have signed Djed Spence and Antonio Conte has admitted that the club picked him out as a key signing.

Spurs have enjoyed a very productive summer so far and had five new signings sorted before landing Spence.

This deal has been going on for weeks, even months as Tottenham and Middlesbrough haggled over a deal.

Finally, a breakthrough was reached last week and Spence has now become Tottenham’s sixth signing of the summer.

Tottenham have signed Djed Spence

Spence impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, helping them win promotion to the Premier League.

Tottenham have now swooped in for Spence in the hope that the 21-year-old can become their long-term right wing back.

Tottenham boss Conte has now commented on the deal, telling Football London that Spence is an ‘investment of the club’.

Conte noted that Tottenham wanted to do the deal for Spence and he gave it the ‘okay’, believing that he can become an ‘important’ player for Spurs even if he didn’t personally pick him out.

“Spence is an investment of the club,” said Conte. “The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him,” he added.

This is bound to be blown up into an angle that Conte didn’t want Spence and that Tottenham have pushed him onto the Italian.

The reality is that Conte gave his approval anyway and will have watched Spence before approving any deal; especially in a position as important to his system as wing back.

Additionally, this is the nature of football now. Directors of football are charged with the task of finding players for the manager, easing the burden on the boss.

Sure, Conte had his say by landing one of his former Inter Milan players in Ivan Perisic, but it’s a balancing act.

Tottenham have signed two veterans in Perisic and Fraser Forster, two proven Premier League players with room to grow in Yves Bissouma and Richarlison and one opportunistic loan for Clement Lenglet.

Tottenham still need to add more young talent to develop for the future and Spence fits perfectly; Tottenham needed a right wing back, they needed youth and speed, they needed homegrown numbers. Spence ticks all the boxes.

Many love to frame Conte as being volatile and ready to walk out at any moment, but these Spence comments are absolutely nothing to worry about.
