Officials identify alleged Lee Zeldin suspect

On Thursday (July 21), Lee Zeldin was giving a speech in Perinton when a man approached the US rep with a “weapon in his hand” on stage, according to a press release from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened at around 8pm local time when a man from the crowd climbed on stage and appeared to wrestle with Zeldin, The Guardian reports.

A video posted on social media shows a male appearing to grab Zeldin’s arm before others intervene and fall down, the outlet reports.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stated that the man was arrested and charged with attempted assault in the second degree, a felony, in Perinton Town Court.

Authorities identified the man as 43-year-old David G. Jakubonis of Fairport. He was “released on his own recognizance”, officials said.

His words as he tried to stab me a few hours ago were “you’re done”, but several attendees, including @EspositoforNY, quickly jumped into action & tackled the guy. Law enforcement was on the scene within minutes. The attacker will likely be instantly released under NY’s laws. pic.twitter.com/wZEyIyrjFe— Lee Zeldin (@leezeldin) July 22, 2022

Statement from Zeldin

Zeldin came forward with a statement on his official Twitter page, thanking everyone who has reached out to him after the incident.

“Thank you to everyone who reached out following tonight’s attack in Fairport. Someone tried to stab me on stage during this evening’s rally, but fortunately, I was able to grab his wrist and stop him for a few moments until others tackled him,” Zeldin stated in a Twitter post.

“I’m ok, and [Alison Esposito, the New York Republican Party’s candidate for lieutenant governor], and all other attendees are safe. The attacker is in custody. Grateful for the attendees who stepped up quickly to assist and the law enforcement officers who quickly responded. I’m as resolute as ever to do my part to make NY safe again.”

Zeldin’s campaign also released a statement and said: “Far more must be done to make New York safe again. This is very much getting out of hand in this state.”

New York governor Kathy Hochul, who is in the leadership race against Zeldin, condemned the attack and wrote: “I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible — it has no place in New York.”

Republican Zeldin has represented the New York’s 1st congressional district since 2015, while Hochul became New York’s first female governor in 2021.
