Alicia Silverstone appears ‘clueless’ over issue about sleeping next to son

Alicia Silverstone’s parenting style has puzzled the internet once again after admitting she still sleeps next to her 11-year-old son.

Silverstone is known for her iconic role as Clueless’ Cher, but her career has taken a backseat to prioritise her family, specifically her 11-year-old son, Bear.

Her unusual parenting style first came to light in 2012, after a clip of her feeding Bear pre-chewed food went viral. Now, the actress has discussed another “natural” practice: sleeping with him.

On the latest episode of The Ellen Fisher Podcast, the actress discussed veganism and her tips to raising healthy children. However, the internet are caught on her parenting methods.

Explaining why she sleeps with Bear, she said: “If you were in any kind of wild setting where there are animals. If you put your baby over there, your baby is going to get eaten. So it’s not ideal for the baby to be over there.”

“I’m a natural mama and I’m a loving mama, and I believe in love and nature. The things I’m doing, I’m not inventing,” the mother defended. “Our society is scared of nature and scared of love.”

The 45-year-old gave birth to her son in May 2011, who she shares with ex-husband Christopher Jarecki. Their divorce was finalised in November 2018.

The internet weren’t the only ones perplexed by her approach to motherhood. Jarecki once described one of her methods as “hippie s***”. Upon trying it himself, however, he was completely on board.

Talk show The View were split over the matter.

“I don’t know any 11-year-old that wants to sleep with me,” Whoopi Goldberg joked.

Lindsey Granger chimed in: “I don’t know Alicia Silverstone, but I feel like this is a little clueless.” The host went on to say that she could “never imagine” sleeping with her daughter as a daily habit at age 11.

She used to feed Bear from her mouth

Silverstone faced criticism for feeding her son mouth to mouth like a mother bird in March 2012, as seen on her blog.

“I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum!, she wrote on The Kind Life.

“I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup…from my mouth to his.”She added: “It’s his favourite…and mine. He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I’m eating.”

An LA Times report claimed that swapping food from mouth to mouth can put children at a higher risk of catching a cold. They quoted a tweet by Delta Dental Of Iowa, who wrote: “Word is Alicia Silverstone chews her food for her child. Don’t follow in her footsteps, you can pass dental disease!”

Not everyone was against her maternal instincts; one YouTube commenter called it “humorous when people ridicule the very things that brought them to life through hundreds of generations.”

Another added: “You know I don’t see what’s wrong with this… Like as long as she is healthy I don’t see the issue! If anything she is making sure he does not choke.”
