Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has told football.london that he considered ‘a lot of offers’ to quit Mikel Arteta’s squad this year after letting his previous contract run down to the wire.

The 22-year-old ended speculation looming over his future at the Emirates Stadium in June with a new deal until 2027. He was otherwise set to become a free agent at the end of last month, but chose to stay in north London after a strong end to the Premier League season.

Arteta made Nketiah his starting striker in April and saw the former England U21 ace score five goals in eight games. He had not hit the back of the net in a top-flight game since April 2021 before striking two at home to Chelsea, and now has 10 from 59 league appearances.

Leeds United were confident of signing Nketiah for free, before he put pen to paper on his new Arsenal contract. The Athletic noted the Elland Road hierarchy had prioritised a move for the Hale Ender, having previously had the forward on loan from the Gunners in 2019.

Crystal Palace and West Ham United were also interested in keeping Nketiah in London if he left the Emirates. Fabrizio Romano reported the Eagles and Irons, along with two sides in the German Bundesliga, had approached his representatives to sound out any interest.

Even big-six rivals Chelsea and Liverpool explored Nketiah’s situation when a move out of Arsenal seemed increasingly likely, per 90min. But the forward has now opened up on his decision to stay in north London, believing that Arteta’s team offers a ‘great’ club for him.

“When you’re at that stage of your contract, you consider all your options and just weigh it all up,” Nketiah said. “I wanted to wait until the end of the season and, of course, I had a lot of offers.

“I sat down with my team, with the manager and my family, and we felt like Arsenal was the best place. I’m really happy with my decision, and I’m looking forward to the future.

“When you get down to that stage of your contract, you’re obviously going to have options and I sat down with my agent and family to go through them all. But Arsenal is a great club for me. I support the club and it’s a great project to be part of.”

Nketiah will now challenge new £45m Arsenal signing Gabriel Jesus to start the upcoming Premier League season as Arteta’s first-choice striker. The Brazilian joins from Manchester City after scoring eight and creating nine goals in 28 last term, on route to his fourth title.
