With Gary Rowett at the helm Millwall have finished in the top half of the Championship in the last three seasons.

The Lions finished ninth last season, six points off the play-off places and the 48-year-old will no doubt be targeting further improvements at The Den ahead of the new Football League season.

The South East London side face Stoke City, Rowett’s former club, in their opening game of the new campaign and the Millwall manager will be eager to start the season strongly with a victory against the Potters.

Ladunblog Sport takes a look at how Millwall could line-up in their Championship opener which comes in ten days time.

How Millwall could line-up on opening day of 22-23 Championship season

One-time Poland international Bartosz Bialkowski will be the club’s number one ahead of the new campaign, a position the 35-year-old has been in command of since joining the Lions in January 2020 from Millwall.

Leeds United and England Under-21 centre back Charlie Cresswell has joined the Lions on a season-long loan from the Whites.

The 21-year-old made five Premier League appearances last season and he could slot in at centre-back alongside Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper.

If Rowett retains his favoured five-man backline than the three centre-backs will likely have Scott Malone and Danny McNamara either side of them.

The aforementioned four Millwall defenders scored 12 goals between them in the Championship last season with the former Derby County left-back Malone also chipping in with five assists.

Keen to raid Elland Road this summer, Millwall have also signed Cresswell’s teammate Jamie Shackleton on a season-long loan and the 22-year-old will add quality, energy and depth to Rowett’s midfield.

Like Cresswell, Shackleton is also a product of the Leeds academy and he has made 78 appearances for the West Yorkshire side, 27 of which have come in the Premier League.

Shackleton could be joined in midfield by fellow newcomer George Honeyman who has arrived at the Den from Championship side Hull City.

Capable of playing anywhere across midfield or further forward, the former Sunderland youngster will bring an injection of goals and creativity to Rowett’s Lions.

The 27-year-old scored five goals and provided four assists in the Championship last season, and in the 2020-21 campaign, while in League One, Honeyman scored four goals and laid on an impressive 14 assists.

After establishing himself as a regular in Rowett’s starting line-up last year, 21-year-old Billy Mitchell will be hoping to retain his place in the XI despite the additional competition for places Honeyman and Shackleton will bring.

Mitchell could occupy a deeper role, allowing the likes of the aforementioned pair to be deployed in box-to-box roles.

Following the departure of star man Jed Wallace to West Bromwich Albion, Millwall will be hoping that they have successfully replaced a player that contributed 42 goals and 49 assists from 260 matches for the Lions.

Millwall have signed Netherlands attacking midfielder Zian Flemming from Eredivisie side from Fortuna Sittard.

The 23-year-old, who came through the Ajax academy, has scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists from 63 games for Fortuna.

He’s netted 24 goals in the Eredivisie across the last two seasons and he’ll bring additional firepower, creativity and guile to Rowett’s squad.

After spending last season on loan at The Den, Benik Afobe has joined Millwall on a permanent deal and will be looking to build on the 12 Championship goals he netted last season.

The 29-year-old, who started his career with Arsenal and played under Rowett, will be hoping to strike up a lethal partnership with Flemming.
